The piece

A self-taught inventor builds a flying machine ahead of its time. The system turns him away. When others triumph with his idea, the village must face its own responsibility.

El vent de Son Gall (The Wind of Son Gall) is a musical based on the true story of Pere Sastre, “Pere de Son Gall”, the farmer from Llucmajor, Mallorca, who built a helicopter prototype in the early twentieth century and was ignored by the institutions of his day.

It is a piece about talent born outside the system, and about what happens when power decides not to listen.

What to expect

  1. 01

    A true story from Mallorca

Llucmajor, early twentieth century. A farmer with no schooling builds a machine to fly with his own hands. History forgot him; the theatre listens again.

  2. 02

    Original music

Fourteen songs by Nicolau Jaume Roig, forty minutes of music woven into the action. The music arrives when words are no longer enough.

  3. 03

    Ninety minutes, one breath

No interval. A bright first part, full of humour and life. A drier second part, where silence weighs.

The story

Early in the twentieth century, in Llucmajor, Pere Sastre works in a makeshift workshop at Son Gall. He watches the birds, talks to the wind and builds with his hands. No schooling, no institutional support. The village laughs at him, fondly.

Hands mark a line on a wooden board with a pencil.

When he sends his plans to Madrid asking for support, the reply is polite and devastating.

Ministerio de Fomento · Madrid

Muy señor mío:

Recibidos la memoria y los planos del aparato que usted denomina «cometagiroavión», esta Sección no encuentra motivo para atender la solicitud de auxilio que formula.

No.

Dios guarde a usted muchos años.

A recreation for the stage, not a historical document. In English: the ministry has received the plans for the cometagiroavió (the name Pere gave his machine) and sees no reason to grant support. No.

Soon after, another inventor, with money, connections and patrons, presents a similar idea and is celebrated.

Pere is not defeated by failure, but by invisibility.

Why now

All the Pere Sastres of the world

We live in an age obsessed with innovation, yet still deeply hierarchical. We celebrate genius only when it arrives backed by degrees, money or connections.

This piece turns the light on the brilliant people who arrived too early, too alone or too far from the centre.

Themes

  • Talent without power
  • Invisibility and social class
  • Dreaming as a political act
  • The polite violence of institutions
  • Memory, guilt and the future

Structure

Two acts and a finale, no interval

A dark stage crossed by beams of blue light.
Act I
Dreaming without permission

Light, humour and innocence. The audience falls for Pere.

Light · ambers and pale blues
Act II
When the dream burns

Power walks on stage. Betrayal, anger and loss.

Light · cold whites and backlight
Finale
The future

Late recognition. Active hope.

Light · moving, open to the audience

Music and sound

The wind is a character you can hear

Forty minutes of original music, woven into the action. Narrative song, soundscape and moments of structural silence. There is no continuous score: every entry is a dramatic decision.

The music does not illustrate: it reveals. The wind is always there, as breath, friction and absence.

The process

The audience sees the effort and the process

A single space that transforms in full view: a wooden platform, moving metal structures and translucent cloths for the wind, the sky and memory. Real materials.

An old carpentry workshop with tools hanging on the wall and a workbench.
Hands sew a white cloth with needle and thread.
A technical drawing with radial lines and a grid.
A chisel cuts into a piece of pale wood.
A few birds fly across a white sky.
A path between olive trees beside a dry stone wall.
